BLUE ACTION for ALL – Embrace Nature by Grass Cutting for Biodiversity in Mai Po

Stemming from the sustainability initiative of “BLUE ACTION MOL”, MOL Hong Kong colleagues (from different MOL group of companies across various nationalities) attended the “Reserve Ranger Volunteering Experience at Mai Po, Yuen Long, Hong Kong” organized by World Wide Fund (WWF) to manage and maintain ideal habitats for wildlife together and to protect the biodiversity at Mai Po by cutting overgrown grass and exotic plants.

It was a very hot day in October when we went to Mai Po. All the participants got training on the proper procedures of grass cutting by using the sickles safely. We were instructed to hold the stems of grass in one hand while swinging the sickle from left to right (for a right-handed user) with the other hand. After hours of effort, we were fully covered in sweat due to the extreme heat, but we had got trolleys of overgrown grass which could even become animal feed for the buffaloes in Mai Po especially during autumn and wintertime. Exotic plants, which would possibly cause problems to Mai Po natural ecosystem, were eradicated by removal simultaneously.

We are proud of having successfully put our “BLUE ACTION” into practices because we ALL believe that action speaks louder than words. “BLUE ACTION MOL” doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work. We have chosen this activity-based learning program to habituate ourselves to sustainability and biodiversity in our daily lives. Although this activity seems to be a small act, every act creates a ripple with no logical ending.
